Secret Santa rules that keep it fun and fair

Secret Santa works because it is simple: everyone buys one gift for one person, and nobody knows who is buying for whom until the swap. A few clear rules up front stop most of the problems people run into, like mismatched budgets, couples drawing each other, or someone finding out their match too early.

The basic rules

  1. Everyone draws one name. You buy a gift only for the person you drew.
  2. Nobody draws themselves. Paper hats get this wrong all the time. An online draw handles it for you.
  3. Keep it secret. Don't tell anyone who you drew, including your spouse if they are also in the group.
  4. Stick to the spending limit. Going far over makes others feel bad. Going far under does too.
  5. Bring the gift by the swap date, wrapped and labeled with the person's name, not yours.

Pick a spending limit everyone can live with

The limit is the rule people care about most. For family groups, $25 to $50 is common. For offices, $15 to $30 keeps it easy for everyone. Say the number out loud when you invite people, and put it on the invite so nobody has to guess. If your group has a mix of incomes, pick the lower number. Nobody has ever complained that a gift exchange was too cheap.

Add rules for couples and close family

In a family exchange, it's usually no fun if spouses draw each other, since they already buy each other gifts. Many groups also keep parents and their own kids apart, or make sure nobody gets the same person as last year. With PullAName, add these as rules before the draw ("Anna can't draw Mike, both ways"). If the rules make a fair draw impossible, the site tells you before anything goes out.

Keep the picks secret, even from the organizer

The old way had one person drawing names and then knowing every match. PullAName works differently. The organizer shares one group link. Each person opens it, taps their own name, and sees only their own match. The organizer page shows who has joined, but never who drew who. For office groups, you can also require an email code, so only the real person can open their page.

Wish lists save everyone time

Ask everyone to add three to five ideas at different prices. A good list has a mix: one thing at the limit, a couple of cheaper ideas, and one "anything like this is fine" item. On PullAName, each person adds a wish list on their private page, and their Secret Santa sees it as soon as names are drawn. See our guide to writing a wish list people can use.

Set the dates

Give people at least two weeks between the draw and the swap, longer if gifts will be shipped. A simple timeline that works for most groups:

What to do when plans change

Someone drops out after the draw? Remove them on the organizer page and draw again. Everyone keeps the same link and sees their new match. Someone new wants in? Add them and redraw. If anyone tapped the wrong name, the organizer can reset that one person.

Common questions

How many people do you need for Secret Santa?

At least 3. Groups of 6 to 20 tend to work best. With very large groups, split into smaller ones so the swap doesn't take all day.

Can Secret Santa work if people are in different places?

Yes. Everyone gets their match online, and gifts can be shipped. Set the swap date a little later and share addresses, or run it as a virtual exchange.

Do you reveal who your Secret Santa was?

That's up to your group. Some groups guess at the swap and then reveal. Others never tell. Decide before you start so nobody is surprised.
